The present compilation was undertaken to meet the demand for a really adequate and up-to-date Bengali-English Dictionary. Bengali being a fast and continuously developing language, the endeavour was as bold and difficult as it was important. No pains have been spared to do full justice to the task and to make the compilation adequate and useful not only to students and teachers whose interest has been kept uppermost in the mind but also to the general reading public.
Thanks to the collaboration of a Board of experienced lexicographers, scholars and professors, the work has been done with a due sense of responsibility. It is now presented to the public who are the sole judge of its value and usefulness.
A Bengali-English Dictionary serves two classes of persons-those whose mother tongue is Bengali and who want to or have to express themselves in English, and those whose knowledge of Bengali is not thorough but who want to have clear notions of Bengali words, phrases and idioms through their rendering into English which they know fairly well. The needs of both classes have been kept in view throughout the work of compilation.
