Moraes Zogoiby, the narrator, who is also called Moor, describes the life and times of his family from the beginnings to his own time. Moor’s body ages twice as fast as that of a normal person's does. He also has a maimed hand. The story depicts Moor’s relationship with his mother, Aurora, and other women, including a renowned national artist, his first tutor, and his first love – a wild, charming sculptor called Uma. The Moor’s Last Sigh won the Whitbread Prize in 1995, the Aristeion Prize in 1996, and was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 1995.
