ছেলেবেলা

Writing one year before he died, Tagore's reminiscences about his childhood come off as very nostalgic and evocative. The youngest of thirteen(!) children, Tagore was a much loved child, not only by his parents but by his elder brothers and sisters. He also made a very close friend in his sister-in-law, Kadambari Devi, as they were pretty much children together. I loved how Tagore contrasts life in 1940 as compared to the last decades of the 1800s, and bemoans the loss of greenery and old-style life. Of course, you would expect an 80 year old man to become evocative and lyrical about his childhood even if it was a horrible one, and Tagore's certainly wasn't! I loved the contrast between the cultures of the times. Women were no longer observing purdah, people had electricity, not to mention chocolates. It is hardly surprising that Tagore went on to win the Nobel. He was schooled in music, wrestling, drawing, English, gymnastics, in addition to the usual school curriculum. Several of his brothers were already writers and composers, though I am not sure if any of their work remains. The family was in the forefront of change, what with abolishing purdah in their home, sending girls to school, and so on. My Boyhood Days covers Tagore's younger days until he goes to England. I really enjoyed this and am looking forward to reading the more detailed My Reminiscences at some point soon. Even if you aren't really interested in Tagore, this book is worth reading because of how beautifully evocative it is!

এই গ্রন্থে কবিগুরু রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর তুলে ধরেছেন শৈশবের দিনগুলোর অপূর্ব উপাখ্যান। জন্মস্থান সম্পর্কে তিনি লিখেছিলেন, "আমি জন্ম নিয়েছিলুম সেকেলে কলকাতায়। শহরে শ্যাকরাগাড়ি ছুটছে তখন ছড়্ছড়্ করে ধুলো উড়িয়ে, দড়ির চাবুক পড়ছে হাঁড়-বের করা ঘোড়ার পিঠে। না ছিল ট্রাম , না ছিল বাস , না ছিল মোটরগাড়ি । তখন কাজের এত বেশি হাঁসফাঁসানি ছিল না , রয়ে বসে দিন চলত। বাবুরা আপিসে যেতেন কষে তামাক টেনে নিয়ে পান চিবতে চিবতে , কেউ বা পালকি চড়ে কেউ বা ভাগের গাড়িতে"। এই কিংবদন্তির জন্ম ১৮৬১ সালে। তাঁর পিতা ব্রাহ্ম ধর্মগুরু দেবেন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর এবং মা সারদাসুন্দরী দেবী। বাবা-মায়ের ১৪তম সন্তান ছিলেন তিনি । বাবার ছিলো ভ্রমণের নেশা। আর কবির মায়ের মৃত্যু হয় ১৯০৫ সালে কবির বয়স যখন মাত্র ১৪ বছর। তাই বলা যায় তিনি বড় হয়েছিলেন দাদা - বৌদি আর বাড়ির ভৃত্যদের কাছে। তাই নানা অভিমান - অনুযোগ বা ভালোবাসার নানা অপূর্ব উপাখ্যান সুনিপুণভাবে তুলে ধরেছেন বিশ্বকবি রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর।

রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর কোথাও আনুষ্ঠানিক শিক্ষা শেষ করতে পারেননি। দেশে স্কুল শেষ করেননি। আবার বিলেত গিয়েও পড়াশুনা শেষ না করে চলে আসেন। রবীন্দ্রনাথ বাংলা সাহিত্যের শ্রেষ্ঠ প্রতিভা নির্দ্বিধায়। এই স্কুল পালানো বিশ্বসেরা কবির আনুষ্ঠানিক শিক্ষার অনুপস্থিতি এক্ষেত্রে বাধা হিসেবে দাড়ায়নি।
