Pre War scenario & the chemistry between Najib Mridha and Madhabi Lata attracted me. But post war part was so terrible, it seems I can see the whole picture. Very well written tale of a War Child. Hope more write up on this issue will strike the ignorance & injustice on War victim. Best wishes to the writer.

যুদ্ধের বিভীষিকা নিয়ে দার্শনিক প্লেটোর একটি কালজয়ী বাণী হলো - "কেবলমাত্র মৃতরাই যুদ্ধের শেষ দেখতে পেরেছে"। উৎকণ্ঠা, ভয়াবহতা কিংবা রুদ্ধশ্বাস অপেক্ষা যাই বলি না কেনো - যুদ্ধের গল্প মানেই অতীতকে খুঁচিয়ে বেদনার ইতিহাস রোমন্থন। আমাদের স্বাধীনতা যুদ্ধের অনেকগুলো বিয়োগান্তক ঘটনার অন্যতম ছিলো যুদ্ধশিশু। যাদের অনেকেরই পরবর্তীতে ঠাঁই হয়েছিলো পশ্চিমা বিশ্বের নানান শহরে। অলকানন্দা-র কাহিনী মূলত এরকম দূর প্রবাসে বেড়ে ওঠা এক ভাগ্য বিড়ম্বিত কন্যাশিশুর। দত্তক নেয়া এসব শিশুদের অধিকাংশেরই আশ্রয় মিলে ইউরোপ আর উত্তর আমেরিকার দেশগুলোতে। নতুন পরিবার আর অজানা পরিবেশে সবাই শেষ পর্যন্ত টিকে থাকতে পারে নাই। অনেকের কাছেই সেই অভিজ্ঞতা ছিলো তপ্ত বালি থেকে ফুটন্ত পানিতে পড়ার মতোই। গল্পের প্রয়োজনে এখানে অসংখ্য চরিত্র আসা যাওয়া করেছে। খুব মনোযোগ দিয়ে না পড়লে এমন অনেক চরিত্রই হয়তো মন থেকে মুছে যেতে পারে যাদের ছোট্ট করে হলেও অবদান আছে। এরপরেও দিনশেষে এই উপন্যাস দুই বিস্ময়কর নারীর - একজন মা আরেকজন মেয়ে। নারী চরিত্র নির্ভর এই উপন্যাস দিনশেষে আরো একবার পাঠককে বলতে শেখাবে - নারী সর্বংসহা, নারী সর্বজয়া। তাঁর জীবনের বাঁকে বাঁকে নিত্যনতুন অভিজ্ঞতা আসে। আসে অদমনীয় কামনা-বাসনা, বাঁধনহারা প্রেম, সুতীব্র হাহাকার, অবিশ্বাস্য প্রত্যাখ্যান, একরাশ ঘৃণা মিশ্রিত আবেগ কিংবা এক জীবন অপেক্ষার প্রহর। বিভিন্ন বয়সী নারীদের জীবনে ঘটে যাওয়া এরকম কিছু গল্পের সমাহার এই অলকানন্দা উপন্যাস। এই উপন্যাস পাঠককে টাইম মেশিনে করে ঘোরাবে গত শতাব্দীর চল্লিশ থেকে সত্তরের দশক। গল্পের প্রয়োজনে বিভিন্ন সময়ে পাঠক ঘুরে আসবে জাপানের হিরোশিমা, কানাডার মন্ট্রিয়ল অথবা একাত্তরের যুদ্ধের প্রান্তর। মুক্তিযুদ্ধের মতো একটি বেদনাদায়ক এবং স্পর্শকাতর বিষয় নিয়ে উপন্যাস লেখার দুঃসাহস করার জন্য লেখককে সাধুবাদ জানাই। এটা তাঁর প্রথম উপন্যাস হলেও গল্পের শুরু থেকে শেষ পর্যন্ত পাঠককে ধরে রাখার প্রয়োজনীয় সব আয়োজনই ছড়িয়ে ছিটিয়ে আছে এই উপন্যাসে। ইতিহাস নির্ভর গল্প নিয়ে আজকাল লেখালিখি কমই দেখা যায়। সেদিক থেকে অলকানন্দা ব্যতিক্রম। আনন্দ-বেদনায় ঘেরা এই চমৎকার উপন্যাসটি সবাইকে পড়ার আমন্ত্রণ রইলো।

I live in Boston, USA, and had to rely on someone to help me purchase the book from Ekushey Boimela, but it was worth the effort. I firmly believe that Alokanonda should be included in the Bengali classics, and the author should be recognized for her exceptional storytelling skills.
