Notes to the successor consist of written impressions left by the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and Sub-Divisional Officers (SDOs) at the end of their stay in their places of posting for their successors about the respective areas under their jurisdiction during the British, Pakistan and post-independent periods, that is after 1947. It also includes a short introduction by Dr. Kamal Siddiqui about what these are, how they were collected and finally what use they may be put to by the present generation of scholars and researchers. It may be added that these were collected by him when he was the Principal Secretary in the PM’s Office in the 1990s from the Deputy Commissioners. It may also be noted that the practice of writing notes to successor was started sometimes during the British period (1757-1947), when Bengal and the sub-continent were British colonies.
It is for the first time that these are seeing the light of the day. It is hoped that these will help a detailed understanding of the country and undertaking research in their respective fields of study.
