The 'Red Death' had long devastated the country. Never before had a disease swept away the populations in such a large number. The streets that once bustled with the noise of daily trades and the laughter of young children now lay abandoned. Doors and windows of houses and shops were bolted and gatherings were few. Even the town hospital that was overpopulated by the sick now lay mostly empty as there was no cure to this deadly illness.
