What a tremendous pleasure i got while going through the pages of this book. Justified by its name, it took me to a delightful journey to the known and unknown world of bengali cinema. Thoughtful explanation, thorough information and charismatic writing style made me finish the book at a stretch. This book also successfully created the urge to watch the mentioned movies that i still haven't watched, this time with a different perspective.

গ্রন্থঃ জার্নি বাই সিনেমা (ঢাকা – কলকাতা নতুন রুটে) লেখকঃ ফরিদুল আহসান সৌরভ প্রকাশকালঃ অমর একুশে বইমেলা ২০২১ বিভাগঃ চলচ্চিত্র সমালোচনা প্রকাশনীঃ গ্রন্থিক প্রকাশন “লাইভ ফ্রম ঢাকা- এক নৈরাশ্য ভরা শহর থেকে বলছি”, “মেঘে ঢাকা তারা- নীলকন্ঠ বেশে ঋত্বিক ফিরে এসেছে”, কিংবা “ঘেঁটুপুত্র কমলা – হাওরে সৌখিনতায় পেডোফিলিয়া” সূচিপত্রে প্রতিটা সিনেমার নামের পাশে এমন ছোট করে একটা ভূমিকা যেন পুরো সিনেমার মোড়ক উন্মোচন করে সেটা দেখার আগ্রহকে বহুগুণে বাড়িয়ে দেয়! আর তাই তো “জার্নি বাই সিনেমা ( ঢাকা-কলকাতা নতুন রুটে)” গ্রন্থটিকে আমার কাছে যতটা না “সমালোচনাধর্মী” তার থেকে বেশী “একটা ইচ্ছের গল্প” বলে মনে হয়েছে। যে ইচ্ছের গল্পে গ্রন্থটিতে উল্লেখিত সিনেমাগুলোতো বটেই সেই সাথে নতুন রুটে চলা অন্য আরো অনেক সিনেমা দেখার সাধ জাগে, যে সিনেমাগুলো নিয়ে হয়তো কেউ কখনো মিডিয়াতে প্রকাশ্যে কিছু বলেনি কিন্তু সেইসব সিনেমাগুলো অবলীলায় অনেক গল্পই ফুটিয়ে তুলেছে হয়তো। তাই স্বভাবতই শুরু থেকেই অগাধ আগ্রহ নিয়ে গ্রন্থটি পড়ার কৌতূহল জেগছিল। উল্লেখ্য যে, এই গ্রন্থটিতে চলচ্চিত্র বাছাইয়ের ক্ষেত্রে বেশ বৈচিত্র্য লক্ষ্য করা গেছে। গ্রন্থটিতে আলোচ্য বেশ কিছু সিনেমা আমার আগেই দেখা আছে। তাই সেগুলো থেকে প্রাপ্ত অভিজ্ঞতা ও পর্যবেক্ষণের সাথে এবং লেখকের লেখনীর মধ্যে আমি খুব সুস্পষ্টভাবে যোগসূত্র স্থাপন করতে পেরেছি। এবং এত দারুণ মিল দেখতে পেয়েছি যে এই ব্যাপারটা আমাকে খুব অবাক করেছে। বুঝার সুবিধার্থে একটা সিনেমা উদাহরণ হিসেবে নেয়া যাক। সিনেমার নাম “হেমলক সোসাইটি”। লেখকের ভাষায়, ” হেমলক সোসাইটি – মৃত্যু থেকে ইউটার্ন”। সিনেমাটি আমি আগেই দেখেছি এবং আমার দেখা সেরা সিনেমাগুলোর একটি হলো এই “হেমলক সোসাইটি”। আমি এমন কয়েকজনকে চিনি যারা এই সিনেমাটি দেখে নিজেদের হতাশা থেকে অনেকটাই মুক্তি পেয়েছে, এমনকি একজনতো বলেছিল যে, তাকে সুইসাইডের চিন্তা থেকে বের হওয়ার জন্যও ” হেমলক সোসাইটি”র স্পিরিট অনেকটা সহায়তা করেছে। উক্ত সিনেমাটি নিয়ে লেখকের সমালোচনা পড়ছিলাম। সেখানকার কিছু লাইন নিম্নরুপ, ” হেমলক সোসাইটি গতানুগতিক ধারার বাইরে একটি ভিন্নধর্মী চলচ্চিত্র, যে চলচ্চিত্র মানুষকে বেঁচে থাকার গুরুত্ব উপলব্ধি করাতে চায়। বেঁচে থাকার কারণ অনুসন্ধান করায়। সুইসাইডের যন্ত্রণা ও পরিণামকে খুব কাছ থেকে দেখিয়ে জীবন মৃত্যুর সন্ধিক্ষণে জীবনের পথে ইউটার্ন নেবার আবেদন সৃষ্টি করে”। গ্রন্থটিতে উল্লেখিত উপরোক্ত সিনেমাটা নিয়ে লেখকের মাত্র কয়েকটা লাইনই যেন আমায় পুরো সিনেমাটা একেবার করে দেখিয়ে দিয়ে গেল! একইসাথে যারা সিনেমাটা দেখেনি তাদেরকেও সিনেমাটা দেখার একটা ক্ষুধা জাগিয়ে দিয়ে গেল বলে মনে হলো। আরেকটা জিনিস খুব প্রকটভাবে আমাকে সাড়া দিয়েছে, তা হলো লেখকের রিভিউ পড়ে মোটেও সিনামার মূলগল্প আন্দাজ করা যায় না। তাই এক্ষেত্রে লেখকের শব্দচয়ন ও বাক্যবিন্যাস যথেষ্ট মুন্সিয়ানায় পরিচয় দিয়েছে। লেখনী আসলে এমনই হওয়া উচিত যেখানে আপনি তা পড়তে পড়তেই যেন সমস্ত দৃশ্যপট আপনার চোখের সামনে দেখতে পেলেন অথবা দেখতে না পেলেও দেখার অগাধ আগ্রহ বোধ করলেন। জার্নি বাই সিনেমা (ঢাকা-কলকাতা নতুন রুটে) চলচ্চিত্রানুরাগী এবং দর্শক যারা গতানুগতিকতার বাইরে চলচ্চিত্র দেখতে পছন্দ করেন বা দেখার আগ্রহ বোধ করেন তাদের জন্য লেখা একটি চলচ্চিত্র সমালোচনা বিষয়ক বই। যেখানে চলচ্চিত্র বাছাইয়ের ক্ষেত্রে বৈচিত্র্যতাকে সর্বাধিক প্রাধান্য দেয়া হয়েছে। লেখক হয়ত চেয়েছেন পাঠক যখন বইটি পড়ে মুভি দেখবে তখন তার মধ্যে একঘেয়েমিতা যেন কাজ না করে। এই কাজে স্বাভাবিকভাবেই তার লেখায় সমালোচনায় নিরপেক্ষ থাকার যথাসাধ্য চেষ্টা পরিলক্ষিত হয়েছে। পাশাপাশি চলচ্চিত্রগুলো যারা আগে দেখেনি তারা যেন লেখা পড়ে আগ্রহী হয় এবং যাদের ইতোপূর্বে দেখা আছে তারা যেন নিজেদের অভিমতের সাথে লেখকের বক্তব্যের একটা যোগসূত্র স্থাপন করতে পারে সেই বিষয়টিও বিবেচনায় থেকেছে। সবমিলিয়ে তাই নিঃসন্দেহে “জার্নি বাই সিনেমা ( ঢাকা- কলকাতা নতুন রুটে) গ্রন্থটি মানের বিচারে পাঠকমহলে বেশ সমাদৃত হবে বলেই মনে হয়েছে। আমার না দেখা চলচ্চিত্রগুলোর সমালোচনা পড়ে সেগুলো দেখার ইচ্ছেতো অনেকটা বেড়ে গেছেই সেই সাথে অবাক হয়েছি এটা ভেবে যে, আমাদের সমসাময়িক বাংলা চলচ্চিত্রে মূলধারার বাইরে নতুন রুটে চলার সাহস দেখানোর মতো অনেক চলচ্চিত্রই মুক্তি পেয়েছে কিন্তু বাংলা চলচ্চিত্রের প্রতি আমাদের বিমুখতা আর অনীহা সেই সিনেমাগুলোকে আমাদের অগোচরেই রেখে দিয়েছে! এটা চলচ্চিত্রশিল্পের জন্য যেমন অসহায়ক ঠিক তেমনি আমাদের চিন্তাধারা এবং মননশীলতা বিকাশের ক্ষেত্রেও হুমকিস্বরূপ! তাই বাংলা চলচ্চিত্র নিয়ে আরো অনেক আলাপ-আলোচনার পাশাপাশি এরকম গবেষণাও প্রয়োজন। কেননা এইরকম গ্রন্থের আর্কাইভাল ভ্যালু অত্যধিক। আর এক্ষেত্রে নতুন রুটে যাত্রা করা কিছু সিনেমা নিয়ে স্বাধীন চলচ্চিত্র নির্মাতা ফরিদুল আহসান সৌরভ এর “জার্নি বাই সিনেমা ( ঢাকা- কলকাতা নতুন রুটে)” গ্রন্থটি চলচ্চিত্র আন্দোলনে অগ্রণী ভূমিকা রাখবে বলে আমি আশা করি।

A book of 50 contemporary Bengali films! Journey by Cinema (Dhaka- Kolkata in new route) by Faridul Ahasan Shourav was first published in Amar Ekushey Book Fair 2021. Faridul Ahasan Shourav is a talented filmmaker and film critic who brought us 50 different movies in different chapters. He reflects his skills and knowledge about music and sound, film editing, and cinematography. He also criticizes many of the films which made the story of the movies livelier. The book is moderate and the readers of the book will never get bored. It helps the readers to know about the movie in a very different and interesting way. A journey always gives me a pleasant experience and also allows me to try new things. The book, Journey by Cinema (Dhaka- Kolkata in new route) also gives me the pleasure of knowing new movies. It is not only a story but also an experience of knowing technical aspects. Each chapter is like a new station for me and inspires the readers to move to the next station. The most interesting and new part I found is the cover page of the book. The cover page gives a hint of light, camera and action. It gives the gesture of knowing something very new and exciting. The colour combination of the book is eye soothing. The writer criticizes fifty different movies and I like the way he criticized them. He was never so biased to any of the directors. The criticism skill of the writer is so flawless and neutral. For example, first chapter-‘live from Dhaka.’ It makes me thirsty to watch the movie. There are more chapters like this to make the readers excited to watch the movies for the second or third time. I have noticed that the writer has focused on many details that I haven’t noticed while watching the films. This book also teaches me to think in a new way and makes me more focused which I really enjoyed. Another interesting part of the book is that many of my thoughts on the films are matched with the writer. I loved the way the starting point of most chapters. The description of the movie was so accurate. The chapters are very edifying and dynamic. The way of talking about the movies is so lovely that I could imagine the characters or the scene in front of my eyes. The thrill and suspense of the movies are kept composed. Nothing immoderate is there in the book. But, certain things could be better. There were typos in many of the chapters, some spelling mistakes that I could not deny. These were a little bit disturbing. The pages of the book could be white like the cover page. The book is full of amusing topics about relative movies. As a reader, I would love to watch Live from Dhaka, Komola Rocket, Matir Moina, Aynabaji, Common Gender, Fagun Haway, Dhaka Attack, Hemlock Society, Ghetuputra Komola, Moner Manush, Debi, Wrong Number, Rani Kuthir Baki Itihash, Goynar Baksho again and again. I would be very happy if the writer talked about some more movies like Belasheshe, Praktan and Zero Degree. While reading the book I think that as Faridul Ahasan Shourav is a filmmaker and critic he exactly knows what the readers actually want from this book. The words he has chosen is simple and familiar to everyone. I would like to recommend this book to every book lovers who want to experience new things and also the ones who appreciate something new. The book is very satisfactory. I would love to thank the writer and congratulate him on his outstanding book. I will be eagerly waiting for something new made by him. I think it's a must-read for anyone who loves movies and maybe needs some pointers to fall in love with Bengali movies. Even if you watch all 50 of them, you will still get to relive those experiences through reading. [ Also, If you are into aesthetic Instagram photos 😜 , It's quite a book cover I must say ]
